STOLL, Helen Rowena Mills 1924-2008

 View/Sign Guest Book

Published in The Oregonian on 4/27/2008.

Helen Rowena Mills Stoll was born May 3, 1924, to Wayne and Rowena Mills in Portland. She grew up in the Whitwood Court area of Northwest Portland; attended Roosevelt High School, St. Helen's Hall Junior College, and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in the arts and sciences. Helen remained a lifelong Husky fan.

Many will remember Helen for her love of dancing. She passed that love on to thousands over the years as a professional ballroom dancer in the Hollywood district and beyond. Throughout her life, Helen dedicated herself to teaching others to dance beautifully and gracefully. A professional ballroom dancer since she was 17, Helen had a ballroom dance act which she performed all over the Northwest in various theater stages, ballrooms, and other venues. Dancing even brought Helen together with her husband, Norman Stoll. While teaching at the Palais Royale Ballroom, another teacher, tall and handsome, caught her eye. She would go on to marry Norman in 1949 and in 1952 welcomed son, Wayne. In 1950, Helen and Norm founded the Norm Stoll School of Dance and Norm Stoll Enterprises. Through their dance studio, the two traveled all over Oregon teaching dance in many places, Milwaukie Jr. High, Gardiner Jr. High in Oregon City, Lake Oswego Country Club, Irvington Club, The Dalles, Bend and Elks Lodges, to name a few. At times, they would have some 20 instructors teaching dancing in and around the state of Oregon and SW Washington. Helen touched so many through dance: From couples who were just getting married and wanted that first dance to be special to whole families celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary.

Helen was also very active in Norm Stoll Enterprises, helping to run and manage an assemblage of apartment buildings, office buildings, shopping centers, duplexes, and houses. During this time, Helen was a president of the Oregon Apartment Association, a member of the American Guild of Variety Artists, and a director of the Oregon Chapter of the National Association of Dance & Affiliated Artists. Helen was dedicated to keeping Northeast Portland, and especially the Hollywood District, a safe and wonderful place for her granddaughters to grow up. From working at the Rose Festival children's parade to simply walking her little dog, Sammie, through the neighborhood, Helen got to know and became friends with many neighbors. She has served as an officer for the Hollywood Neighborhood Association and the Hollywood Boosters. As a result of her long-standing service to her community, Helen was honored by American Mothers, Inc. with the 2004 Bertha Holt "Service to Children" Award. Helen Stoll passed away on Monday, April 14, after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Helen is survived by her husband of 58 years, Norm; son, Wayne; daughter-in-law, Alison; grandchildren, Annsley and Kaitlyn; and cousins, Gerry and Peggy.

A celebration of life service for Helen were held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Grant Park Church, on the corner of NE 34th and Knott.

We will always love and remember our wife, mother and grandmother.

Remembrances in Helen's name may be sent to Eighth Church of Christ Scientist in Portland.

HISTORY OF THE CLAPPER

The clapper (also known as a slate, skateboard, clacker, clapsticks, clapper board), was invented sometime during the early 1920's. Sound was just being introduced to film, and film makers needed a way to synchronize sound with film. Striking the sticks would create a clap sound that would be recorded and later synchronized with the visual film allowing the picture and sound to run in sync. Clappers are still in use today and have become an historic symbol of the motion picture industry.
